Fair to middlin' of nowhere

The wheat harvest of ‘17
has come and gone
with nary a word from me.
I watched it all,
from fields of green sprouts
to waving golden stalks
of headed out wheat.
I’ve watched the combines come
in ones and twos
to cut the wheat down
with giant headers.
I’ve listened to the semi’s
thunder up and down
the roads to the grain elevators.
I’ve watched the heavy trucks
put pot holes in the asphalt
like they do every year.
I’ve watched the stubble fires
burn the fields black
and ready the land for planting.
I have watched all this
with disinterested eyes
like reruns from the ‘70’s.
I think it was a good crop this year,
but I couldn’t say for sure.
So much my mind was somewhere else,
I really didn’t bother.
I didn’t bother to gather stray stalks
to put in a vase on the porch.
My only interaction with harvest
was passing combine caravans
on the road to their next field.
And admiring the color of the sunrise
as it reflected off the fields.
Other than that
it did not penetrate my peripheral.
Strange to have that feeling
of  being here,
and yet,
not really going there.
Just passing through
unencumbered, uninspired.

Ah, Lori, you have things much more pressing on your mind these days than "The Wheat Harvest of '17."

Yes, it seems to be holding my mind hostage. Hopefully it will be over soon. ~L

I'm sure hoping it will be over soon, my friend.

Dear Lori Belle I agree with Jerry ~ You've much bigger fish to fry than the wheat harvest. I've never had the pleasure of seeing it before ~ I thank you for the picture you painted in my mind through your word art Alana

Lori, I like the scenery you paint, even though you weren't into it this year. I know for sure that if I was there, I'd watch with fascination for a day or two or more!

Thinking back a few days, maybe it was "School days, school days . . . " on your mind...
