The cruel streets I walked made me sad
I looked not at him, nor at her
Those who passed me by, gutter grads
I felt at home among the curs
We were outcasts from hearth and home
Over the land our kind did roam.

Looking here and then searching there
As many as stars in the sky
By foot, by car, sometimes by air
We wanted to understand why
We couldn't go back where we'd been
Burned our bridges and that's a sin.

Some were poets within their hearts
A killer or two in the crowd
And some were like me; a la carte
Doing what it took to be proud
Some chased women, some ran from them
And in the mêlée some lost a gem.

I sit here writing words of mine
Wondering how many are left
Who write words and sell for a dime
I have escaped death's cold, cold theft
I have fought the fight and I've won
I'm old yes, but I've just begun

quote:
"Burned our bridges and that's a sin"
"Sin" or no Mr. Bolton, I've sometimes burned a bridge or two just to keep myself from crossing them again. Still, in context, I catch your drift.
quote:
"I'm old yes, but I've just begun"
Now that justifies the entire poem Sir!

Great read!

Pass the Glade if you're going to do that here...

I'm sure "your kind" are few and far between. On a hard road the mileage takes its toll. And I'm sure you were smarter than most as well.
As I have said before, you are a blessed man, to be able to wake up to the feeling you've just begun at this stage of the game. How inspiring to wake to a new day and have it actually feel new. I envy you your light heart. ~L

Thank you very much, PU, for your fantastic comments. You give me more credit than sometimes I deserve. But thank you again.

Lori, Lori, "smarter than most," Ahhh . . . Would that be true, but I was down in the trench's with the rest of them. But as far as being a "blessed man" I feel that way also, but I blame it on the genes which were passed down to me. Thank you for your thoughts, they are touching.
