In My Father’s Shadow

We got up earlier than the others
My handsome father and I
Slipping into warm clothes, layers
To defeat the foggy sky

We would sock around the kitchen
Coffee for him, juice for me
Eye twinkles, winking
Soon to escape to the sea

Fishing poles and earthworms
Some cheese and bread in case
Giving fish their many options
To appease their fishy taste

Most often we caught sun rays
The kind that come from the sky
Most often we shared calm silence
We were each other’s high

I stood in daddy’s shadow
From the cooler winds
Wondering if his thoughts were mine
When he’d chuck me under my chin

And I knew we were in kinship
That kind that goes unspoken
For his shadows still sustain me
Like the sea, unbroken.

This is quietly beautiful, my friend. All the right words were said without glamorizing any of them.

Sweet poetry for sure Miss Sunshine, but for some, 'daddy's shadow' was much more ominous.

Pass the Glade if you're going to do that here...

Thank you everyone. It was a good memory, one of many; Avila beach and Pismo beach were our favorite spots, and a recent Avila Beach video on FB brought those memories flooding back. It is good to see all of you.

Hello, Karilea!
It has been too long since I've been here. Pictures like you have so beautifully painted bring memories of my grandpa. I read this aloud, enjoying the ease with which it tripped off my tongue.
     Great to read you again!

Thank you, Ladies. This tripped off my tongue in a pleasant way, as well. It feels good to dip my pen into the inkwell again.

Karilea ~ you remind me of early mornings, sipping coffee with my brother and Dad. His cup was filled with hot coffee and a dab of cold milk. Our cups were filled with milk and a dab of hot coffee. Thank you for reminding me of special times.

LJA, it was such a sweet message, you had to leave it twice, and I love it.

To all, it is good to be home in the blue; and to see and hear from SO many of you.

Love, Sunshine
