I've been in some scrapes, street battles, marital unrest. Oh my, I've lost and found more than most can imagine. These days I sip a cuppa joe, staring at dawn breaking take the leash from its hook call Zoe for our morning walk routine, my days are all about routine – fix breakfast, wash what I need to wash and to the computer I go, hoping to hear from two special people I know only through the Internet – they make my day. Outside the many hued birds are chirping and hopping around looking for edibles the sun highlights their colors I post a poem wondering why I have lost the desire for novel writing. Seems I am just sitting here each day waiting for death to put its icy cold fingers upon my still beating heart – sure we all wait on death, some don't understand that part of life, the time of age when throughout the day dying crosses your mind more so than not. Morbid, but it's coming, can't hold it back. Ah . . . I raise my second cup of coffee, and sip the bitterness of strong dark java, helping chase away impure and depressing thoughts as I watch the suns’ rays chase my morning blues away. Sigh. Guess I'll try to write a poem. ©October 3, 2016 / Jerry Pat Bolton ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

quote:Excellent perspective, if not a good bit of introspection Jerry. You're not alone in situation, but your abilities to describe what you're feeling is what makes good poetry in my opinion. For myself, thinking more about dying as we grow old simply means we're more in touch with living than we used to be. Remember when you never thought about death? When we were indestructible? All the crazy things we did that could have killed us really DID make us stronger! Let's do them again! Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead! Wine! Women! Songs! (***cough***cough***) Loving Linny Jean is poetry. |

Heh.Heh I'm coughing right along with ya, Ari. I adore your take on my poem. You give it feet to walk tall and proud down that solitary road to . . . Whatever happens first . . . Death, or wine, women and song. Gotta damn well love it. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

You're very kind to your dog and people that are nice to animals are nice people too! I always like to read your poems! What will happen to your poems when something happens to you? I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather...not like the passengers screaming in the back of his car. |

Good thoughts while having some early morning coffee JerryPat. I like your way of thinking. It's real enough as it's written, that's for sure and it includes things many of us think about, but seldom say. BTS ...just bein' Bluesy |

Ah DV, that is then is the question isn't it? I have given one of my daughters and my son a copy of my poetry about two months ago, and will try to send an update to them later on. You always ask the tough questions, don't you? But I thank you for it. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

Oh BTS, the inner thinking we do is the purest form of communicating with ourselves. When we think our happy thoughts -- like when we are in love -- a feeling of grandeur comes over us. Eh, but as we grow older death creeps in and pretty much takes over our thoughts. Well, at least it does mind. Sometimes I fantasize about living forever. Silly, but I am positive I am not the only one who has had that thought. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

When reaching our seventies we are approaching that door where all living things have to pass through. The pattern of birth, life, death and re-birth is essential for life itself to exist. If we could reproduce but nothing ever died then all life would be extinct after a few centuries. The balance of nature is fundamental to life itself. There are those who tell us that in the future it would be possible to live to 130 but why would anyone want to live in an eighty year old body for another 50 years? Death is inevitable for all of us so why waste your time seeking answers where there are none. Far better is to enjoy the time left to you mate, hopefully years. Cari |

Eh, thank you, Cari. I didn't think I was seeking answers with my poem. I was just lamenting my age, and how I am more attuned to having death on my mind than before. No, of course not, answers was not my reason for writing the poem. Thank you for stopping by and checking me out. Oh! And as far as living to be 130, in an eighty-year-old body? I'll pass on that also. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ [This message has been edited by JerryPat2 (10-10-2016 10:39 PM).] |

I think its awesome that you chase away your morning blues. There's something to be said for ritual especially if it makes you feel better. I like this poem a lot! One ladle serves the soup that feeds the mouths of the many. |

Hi Jerry. It's the routine that gets to me the most. My cat has his routine and I have mine. Just told someone today that I hate it but sometimes when my routine gets upset by whatever then I'm not too happy either. Can't win in this life of ours. And. yes, as one gets older it's natural to think of death - not great but natural. You're lucky that you can still write poems. I seem to have lost that searching and thinking (and feeling) that made me put "pen to paper". Maybe one day something will attract my attention again but for now I'm sort of numb. Life is what it is. Trying to get to grips with it seems now a useless endeavour for me. Still, things can change as I well know. My best to you. Helen |

Ah Helen, so very good to see you here again, it has been a while. Thank you for you kind, kind thoughts and words. About that routine. I remember the days when I didn't have much of a routine. I was a spontaneous kind of guy. Eh, but that old age factor has settled me into pretty much of a daily routine. Yes, I still find things which prompt me into writing yet another poem. I never was one to go into writer's block. Writing! It is the one thing which has held me together I am certain. I no longer am able to write novels, but I guess poetry will be with me until the end. Again, good to "see" you, Helen. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

I'm sure your curiosity is getting the better of you on this dying business. Ya know it's coming sooner or later. Like I told Dennis with his cancer scare, "you can still get hit by a bus tomorrow." The main thing is that you keep doin' what you are doin' because it is obviously working so well for you. Your body may be slowly going to pot, but your mind is alive and cookin'. Better than vice versa. Write on! ~L |

Thanks Lori, and you are absolutely correct. It is much better for the body to age that the mind. Dennis is a very lucky man to have you at his side during this cancer scare. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |
