London Streets
*
*

Victorian brick
Topped by plastic facades
Jigsaw the past and present
Above the lamplights glare
A chimney landscape
Stretches east to St Martins in the Fields
~
Jade eyed wary
The street wise cat inspects a waste bin
Selecting delicacies with gloved talons
Licks her paws and watches
a left over reveller tack across the road
One more rudderless frigate on an alcoholic sea
~
Yesterday’s news fielded by a lamppost
A pictured celebrity scowls at the 3am rain
Cloud reinforcements arrive from the west
Joyful cascades beat on cracked pavements
From the shelter of a Boots doorway
The cat surveys the sodium sky

Thanks for letting us know what "Boots" was, I was scratching my head until my eyes fell upon your words below the poem.

What seems like a late-night street scene with its leftovers from yesterdays trash, which the cat eyes are very adaptable to survey its world. There is a feast awaiting.

There is a reason for the inclusion of a cat in the poem because the cat has links with the city from way back.
Dick Whittington and His Cat is the name of English folklore surrounding the real-life Richard Whittington (c. 1354–1423), wealthy merchant and later Lord Mayor of London, telling a story of how he escaped his poverty-stricken childhood and made his fortune thanks to the ratting abilities of his cat.

Thanks for reading

Cari.
