Sirens of Orange Avenue
By: Nadia Lockheart
6/13/16
.
.
1:15,
Sunday morning,
I'm looking for some release,
another one of those nights,
I feel like I'm wearing someone else's body,
comparing others highlight reels,
with my behind-the-scenes,
so I walk out into the humidity,
down West Esther Street...

Has your body ever burned,
with the shame of feeling displaced?
Are you longing for a refuge,
where your tears dry at their own pace?
Aren't you tired of others weighing facts,
with their thumbs on the scales?
Well, there's still a place I know,
where I can be all white tie and tails..."

It's where I learned to love community,
it's where I learned to love myself,
it's where everyone took me under their wings,
an afterglow unparalleled,
it's my vacation time,
it's my referral to therapy,
where anything that's human,
is never alien between you and me...

Has your body ever burned,
with the shame of feeling displaced?
Are you longing for a refuge,
where your tears dry at their own pace?
Love should never have to mean,
having to dwell in anxiety,
well, there's still a place I know,
where I can be all leather and Maybelline...
.
.
It was nearing last call,
when we stole a last kiss,
in the Jewel Box...

...our buddies sipping Pinnacle,
swaying to a bachata song...

...we thought we heard firecrackers,
in honor of community pride...

...then when the ground caved in,
we could barely run for our lives...

...crawling past the Adonis Room,
and out the back patio...

...but we got lost somewhere,
and I don't have anywhere to go...
.
.
.
...five in the morning,
the sun is slowly rising,
crouching outside Delaney Court Condos,
my withdrawals crystallizing,
not everything becomes transparent,
in a world of shattered glass,
but I hope it won't be too long,
before I'm reunited at last...
...where the heartbeats of my family,
will always pulsate at full blast...
.
.
Has your body ever burned,
with the shame of feeling displaced?
Are you longing for a refuge,
where your tears dry at their own pace?
Trying to find asylum,
in a vapor-trailed frontier,
where the sirens of Orange Avenue,
are drowned out by empathetic cheer...

...where the heartbeats of my family,
will always pulsate loud and clear...

A piece of the human puzzle of which we all are one, all of us that are left and pieces yet to form.

The ink well will never run dry until the tears stop falling.

More feelings and fewer words please

don't worry about others and what they think, kick those thumbs off the scales and always, be white tie and tails....
