One Sad Birthday

She burned her voice
deliberately
Enjoyed it
she said

I knew from her first words I heard that night
that it had been a long time coming
It had the rasp of heat and smoke
of years turning supple youth
into a stiffness of self-abuse

She had to have heard
from the phone at her ear
but seasoned words passed though
My caution and fear so easily dismissed

I knew how
I'd had my last
But she didn't care
It wouldn't happen to her
It somehow couldn't be that real

Dear Krawdad, you remember our dear Helen - 1slick_lady with love and sadness. As you say it is ... the immediate pleasure seems to keep far away the real risk of illness. And then suddenly it is too late to recover health.

Your loving melancholic words show how dear Helen is still deeply missed and loved. She was a wonderful Poetess and member of the blue pages.

Thank you for your intense tribute. We shall continue to keep her within our hearts.

It is good to see you here, please do stay ...

Love and hugs.
Margherita

She was one slick Shiney lady...she was always so gracious in her replies to me, and her poetry touched deep in the heart.  Miss you...

I didn't know her at all, but she must have been a wonderful lady to be so warmly remembered by you all.

More feelings and fewer words please
