I give you my blessing before I go,
It's the least I can do for those I owe.
I do not have magical words to say,
As clouds begin to form in lines of gray.

You see before you now, I'm without sham,
I have never changed, I've lived without scam.
I have wandered here and there all alone,
And have drifted which way the wind has blown.

I've not lived for dreams, but I've plundered some,
I've walked the high road and I've been a bum.
My real education has been worthwhile,
It befitted me and my travelin' style.

I have passed through life and left my own wake,
There were times it was more like an earthquake.
Inside my heart forbidden thoughts are mine,
Of loves I have spilt like leftover wine.

Regrets, of course, there are some I recall,
I would write them down in my old man's scrawl,
But I've already forgiven my part,
Now it's up to others to clear my chart.

So here I'm standing on the edge of death,
Never knowing when I'll breathe my last breath.
If I've wandered foolishly through my years,
I will leave it my own way sans a tear.

I like your attitude and your poems alot! You have many more to write so get busy!

If I were more than I am, I'd see things differently instead of the same all the time.

Yeah you're right, DV, and I am looking forward to eighty years of age a little over three years from now. Thank you very much for your wonderful comment . . .

If I may a suggestion. It seems you have led a life often from the other side of the tracks and that being so then you must have a store cupboard of tales to tell in stories and poems.
The vast majority of us live pretty ordinary lives i.e. raising a family, working nine to five jobs and left with just our imagination to enhance our poetry.

After my army service I did a fair bit of wandering in Africa and Europe but I married at thirty and all that changed for ever, but I still reach back to those free years to add to my the short stories and poetry.

So my advice, for what its worth, is to reach back to explore the years, I am sure you have many tales to tell though maybe not a second Woody Guthrie but you know what I mean.

I understand President Bush used ‘This Land is Your Land’ as his election song. I wonder if he was acquainted with all the verses, because I don’t think they were singing from the same song sheet.

Take care.
Cari.

Good day, Cari. Actually I do have quite a few "stores and/or tales" from back then. Most of them are on the dark side. I accept your suggestion with pleasure.

Oh my, Cari, to even mention my name in the same sentence with Woody Guthrie blew me away. You are correct by saying I'm no Woody Guthrie, and I will be the first to say it my own self.

Thank you, I most appreciate your comments.

Love that very last line my friend........
Great attitude!
Go tomorrow won't miss a thing anyway.
It's all attitude man.

Like Homer and Jethro said in one of their song lines...

"My wife ran away with my friend Jim
Don't miss her but I sure miss him"!

Good writing Jerry!

Hah! It has been a long, long time since I have thought of Homer and Jethro. But you are correct, today is today, don't live in the past . . . Still, there are things inside me begging to come out.

Thanks Eric!

And those things will come out at a time when you least expect it and in a way you would never imagine.

Just the way of it......there's really no template for life.

The key to John Lennon's most famous song was the title...."Imagine"

Have a good one.

Couldn't have closed so many great lines any better Jerry. Like another "Jerry" once sang, "What a long strange trip it's been".

"Keep on truckin' " pal.

More feelings and fewer words please

My how time flies my friend! As always it is not the age it is the mileage...and you have had many a colorful mile. You are a man of emotions, you have known love and hate and all things between and been able to wrestle them to the blank page and you are still going strong.  I'll be looking at sixty in a couple of years and even though tomorrow is promised to no one, I hope I make it as far as you have come and are still going. ~L

Ahhh . . . Lori, I too hope your sixtieth birthday will be yet another stepping stone and that you will surely catch up to my age, and beyond, and will be smiling all the way.

"I give you my blessing before I go"

And what a wonderful eulogy, and inscription on your head stone: he blessed us all before leaving.
Thanks, Jerry, for your wonderful thoughts and poetry.
