We stayed past the limit forcing a lie
crushing the values we brought in.
We lost in the end we were out of line
there's no going back there again.

The Autumn days have finally come.
There's shelter in the memories now.
The sad mistakes are gone and done
now I have time to look around.

Oh time and time again
I think of you my lover friend.
We had good years I miss sometimes
but I got time on my side again.

What a nice way to look at things! I like to think people I've known feel the same way! I liked your poem very much!

If I were more than I am, I'd see things differently instead of the same all the time.

That is the only way to look at it, Eric. It is amazing to me that the beauty we see in each other can fade, even disappear usually in five to ten years of living together. I blame it on the little lies -- sometimes big ones -- we told, or kept from each other in the beginning of the relationship. Secondly, I blame it on just living day by day, soon "routine" wears us down.

A lot of truth to that Jerry.
Hollywood has made billions on happy ever after without ever explaining the reality of it all.
I'm definitely not saying a good marriage isn't possible. There are millions out there that have been married until death did separate them.
However, when lack of communication and untruth enter the picture then trouble begins.
However, solace is there in the mellow years whether together or separated.
Sometimes even draws separated ones closer together as friends than they were during the course of marriage.

We have built in recovery cells.....LOL!!

GOOD THING!!

Enjoyed your poem and "built in recovery cells" - yes, for sure.  Where would we be without them?  I actually think I'm done with memories now but they're sneaky, you know, and just keep popping up when least expected.

Thanks Helen
Yes those memories are sneaky sometimes but we'd be like broken ship far out on the ocean without them.
I appreciate the comment.

good title! and an interesting way to think about it. We all (should) grow and change with time. Some of us need to mellow, some of us need to be bolder to be our better selves. Despite all the aging crapola this is really the best time of my life. I think love gets better because you have a better capacity for it. Actually we have a better capacity to appreciate most everything. ~L

thanks for the comment Lori.
Many truths in what you mention and being open minded through the duration is a big positive in life.
