(Here's my response song to David Bowie's "Heroes" and his Berlin trilogy-era works: paying nods to his mid-career work and trying to fathom the tremendous hopelessness, wistfulness and despair, but also unflinching will and shimmering desperation, of two lovers being separated by a wall in dangerous times from the person on the other side of the wall's perspective.

I cried waterfalls writing this, so I know how intensely Bowie's legacy and gift will be to each of us and being a true visionary, empathetic voice for tens of millions the whole world over!

Prove

.
.
.
Shards of broken light,
keep slow-dancing behind,
my eyelids,
as life stands still and stares...

...shadows and silhouettes,
jostle in your head,
kilometers and red lights,
burn like signal flares...

but...

...we can draw the blinds on yesterday,
rather than be slaves of a burning ray,
there's still strength in your stride,
that they can't desensitize...
.
.
.
How come you only want tomorrow,
we have no more time to borrow,
just dolphins caught in the undertow,
blinded by desire...

...win or lose,
love can fight the good fight,
the glory lies in the sacrifice,
even if tomorrow never arrives,
and we're caught in the crossfire...

...these walls are built, baby...

...to prove,
how badly we want something,
baby...
.
.
.
...you train by shadow boxing,
as time keeps on knocking,
that we can't steal,
or bend to our will...

...lean over the freeway,
there's something in the day,
and in the way,
that holds you at a standstill...

...why...

...must we keep up this allowing of,
jumping in the furnace,
singing old songs we loved,
this is still our time,
don't you want to try and rise...
.
.
.
How come you only want tomorrow,
we have no more time to borrow,
just dolphins caught in the undertow,
blinded by desire...

...win or lose,
love can fight the good fight,
the glory lies in the sacrifice,
even if tomorrow never arrives,
and we're caught in the crossfire...

...these walls are built, baby...
...to prove,
how badly we want something,
baby...
.
.
.
I want to stick it out,
and make it work,
even if only for today,
just this once...

...I never could imagine,
how precious the sky,
could ever be to us,
until we didn't have one...
.
.
.
How come you only want tomorrow,
we have no more time to borrow,
just dolphins caught in the undertow,
blinded by desire...

...win or lose,
love can fight the good fight,
the glory lies in the sacrifice,
even if tomorrow never arrives,
and we're caught in the crossfire...
.
.
.
...these walls are built, baby...

...to prove,
how badly we want something,
baby...

...these walls are built, baby...

...to prove,
how badly we want something,
baby...
.

Very passionate and poignant tribute to David Bowie, dear Nadia!

You dance on, also with words that spring from the heart.

Love,
Margherita
