Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Red foxes live in dens nearby,
we often catch glimpses.
They grew thin and bold with the drought.
and began to prowling the village at night.
We sat out scraps, sat back and waited.
The street lights threw lines of shadows
they followed in like sidewalks
in and out of invisibility.
The scraps were at the edge of illumination.
It took some circling to assess the approach.
It became a ritual at night on the porch
to sit and watch the foxes.
The foxes soon began to show us their gratitude
in little places in the grass.
Then they were oh so grateful in the driveway.
But I was overwhelmed by gratitude on my porch.
That was when we decided we had helped them enough.

Ahhh . . . Wish we could figure out how to stop helping the wolves at our door. About time we did that. Eh . . . unlike the foxes the wolves have entered our house with the help of big brother.

Anyway, I'm sure y'all were really amused about the foxes. I know I would have been. Guess I'll have to start luring gators up to The Hovels' door . . . that'd be a novelty.

Gratitude of Foxes may just be the name of my new book that I am currently compiling. I believe it should be the last poem of the book. The more I think about it Jerry the better I like it.

Hey! You can't do that! That's what I was gonna call MY new book!

Its about all the cool girls that I used to go out with from all over everywhere! Every time I had a fling with a fox, they ALWAYS showed me an extraordinary amount of gratitude!

ITS TRUE!!            ITS TRUE!!          ITS TRUE!!

She told me "play one for your supper Danny and maybe you'll get breakfast".

TF is writing a book? Won't that be a whopper of a fish story! You really had me going crazy!

It was just a thought which made them run. It was just an act that killed them.

I can relate to this poem, as I live between the woods and the road, and many criters visit my yard. The biggest being Black bears. I heard foxes barking in the woods a couple days ago, though they have not become beggers. Your poem reminded me of them.

James,
Yes, the foxes are beautiful. There is a poem around here somewhere about them. ~L

Ice,
I hate to think what bear gratitude looks like...Hungry bears are scary. But I guess black bears are less aggressive than some.
How cool is that to have that kind of wildlife? ~L
