simplicity is the ultimate in sophistication
the so-called sophisticates
are counterfeit shams
to live a life of simplicity
means not you are a simpleton
but that you are uncomplicated and open
not tight-lipped
or morally constipated
and don't look down your censorious
nose at those
you feel are inferior
still . . .
there comes a time of revealing
even unto ourselves
who, and what we are
we all
at one point in life
must gather around us
the melancholy of consequence
and ask ourselves
are we as uncomplicated
as the person sitting next to us

Hey there JerryPat,

Its a simple life I'm living now. I know this because I compare it to the busier, more complicated lifestyle that I once lived.

I don't interact with as many people as I once did either, and I really don't miss that as much as I thought I would. I don't use social media except poetry forums. I've never had a facebook account, twitter account or even a cellphone. I have a wall phone that I'm quite fond of. That alone makes me simple, if not downright Jurassic!
My third and current wife of 10 years is much younger than I and has a profession that requires all those things.

One thing I try never to do is ask myself:
quote:
are we (am I) as uncomplicated
as the person sitting next to us (me)

I engage people at the stores and restaurants we (I) go to and always seem to have fun doing it without comparing myself or developing preconceived ideas of who they are. For me, that's just not 'cricket'.

Good, thought-provoking poetry JerryPat!

I think you can live a simple life, not look down on anybody, have money and be very complicated. I agree a simpler life is best if that is your choice and not forced on you by circumstance. Looking down on people is not just reserved for the haves looking down on the have nots.
I got the feeling from your writing that you were questioning your position in the scheme of things by comparison.  The texture of your fabric, my friend, is as unique as everyone else's and just as rare and valuable. Not every piece has to be ornate to fit into the quilt...~L

I'm the same as you, Ticklefingers, in that I don't interact with nearly as many people as I used to. Never thought I would have a cell phone, but necessity made me get one. I don''t message, I use it strictly s a phone, phone I do not have twitter account, and, like you I use the Internet to seek out poetry forms, such as PiP.

You said . . .

"One thing I try never to do is ask myself:"

I'm afraid I allowed what little literary and poetical insight I may have to cause me to make the statement about wondering if the person sitting beside me was as uncomplicated as were I. I really never do that except it appears in my thoughts of writing poetry overemphasizes the situation.

Thanks for your super comment . . .

I actually don't look down on anyone, Lori, sorry if I gave you that impression . . .

You said . . .

"I got the feeling from your writing that you were questioning your position in the scheme of things by comparison."

No indeed, it seems I need to go back through this poem and tighten it up a bit, or maybe scrap it altogether. It was only last night that I told someone that I was living happier than I have in my whole life. That is true, and I blame it on the semi simple life I am living.

Thank you for your valuable thoughts on this poem.
