distant is the voice
that gives substance to my essence

is it in a fogbank of insecurities
for an unusual season

or have I left it dead or dying
on the mean streets of yesteryear

I think the voice calls from afar
laughing and teasing in a good way

so . . .

how many miles must I travel
to conjure up that voice
which gives substance to my essence

Maybe that which gave substance to your essence is a part of then. And what gives substance to your essence is in the here and now. Perhaps that laughing is you laughing at yourself for thinking your essence is rooted somewhere other than in your heart as it is today and will be tomorrow. You are not the man of your past, he has moved on, grown, morphed into the you that you have become. Wait on nothing my friend. You have arrived at your destination for today and you have made it a good place to be. ~L

So it's laughing and teasing in a good way. That means, the good stuff is still there.
