Back to Palmdale

I can remember a fun day with
my brother Terry and a friend
named Nancy Daughters; we started
calling her fancy Nancy after she
wrote a poem about us, I can
remember a part of it still today;
two of the lines were, "James is handy,
Terry is dandy.",  on this occasion,
she had recently graduated from Palmdale
High School and I had recently returned
from the U.S. Army in Europe, and my
brother Terry was introducing to friends
he knew while I was overseas in the Army,
I was about 21 and he was 19  and Nancy
was about 18,  we all lived in the desert
in an area they call Antelope Valley, I'm not
sure why it carried that name, I saw plenty
of snakes and jackrabbits out there but nare
an Antelope; So Nancy decided that now she
was gtaduated she was going to move to Long
Beach, seemed like a good idea to me, we were
always happy to rescue a damsel in distress,
so me and Terry rented one of those open air
U-Haul trailers, loaded up Nancys furniture and
left early one morning from Palmdale to Long
Beach, I think it was 90 miles,  once we were on
our way on the Freeway we were all sitting in
the front seat, we had the stereo blasting and
we were all laughing and singing along to some
Rolling Stones songs when suddenly we heard
a loud noise coming from outside the vehicle,
it was even louder than our music which was
pretty loud, we were kind of caught up in the
moment of enjoying ourselves and it startled
us, at first it seemed like a voice coming
out of nowhere, was it God talking to us
from the Heavens, perhaps not thinking the
move was such a good idea; no not that, it
was a California Highway Patrol on his intercom
telling us to move to the slow lane and slow
down, we made our way to Long Beach with no
more incidents,  me and Nancy staying and my
brother Terry going back to Palmdale.
