Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Getting ready to go camping
in the Black Hills of South Dakota
for our annual pilgrimage to Sturgis.
Packing up the old van
with all our usual gear
with one exception-
our special guest this year.
My beloved Winston dog
is coming along
to keep me company.

Things will be different this year!
I will have a companion
on that dash to the wash house
first thing in the morning.
He will be there watching me
with big black eyes
as I put the coffee on to perk
and make the campfire
to ward off the morning chill.

We will take walks around the campground
and meet the other animals there.
There will be other dogs and cats on leashes.
Squirrels will run from tree to tree.
I wonder what he’ll think of the ducks
on the trout pond
competing with the fish for bread crumbs.

He’ll charm the other campers
on the patio.
He doesn’t know a stranger-
he loves to say hello.
His silky coat is irresistible
and says, pet me.

There is a mountain stream
that winds and babbles
its way through the campground.
Winston and I will see
if it is too cold for wading
among the flowers and trees.

Vacation daydreams
filling the days counting down.
Soon we’ll be northward bound.
The Mountains are calling
and we are a coming.

Oh yes indeed, Lori, Winston will be a wonderful addition to your annual foray into the Black Hills of South Dakota. Thought I heard once upon a time you two (not Winston) was going to give uo that annual trip, guess not. Have a wonderful time both of ya!

Jo,
Tho we are camping it is hardly roughing it. it takes about 4 hrs to set up our basic camp site with enclosures and awnings and camouflage netting. We call it the compound. We stay very dry and cool. We even have a place undercover to park the motor cycles. ~L
