A Couple Thousand Miles from Mom and Dad

When I was 18
and a young soldier in France
the sweetest little French girl
invited me to a local dance;
I was far away from home
and I wanted to fit in
so that was one of the reasons
I told her I'd see her at ten p,m.
I was carefree, it was innocent
we danced til we grew weary
then at midnight just like Cinderella
she disappeared in a hurry;
I couldn't find a slipper
I didn't walk her home
but I had a wonderful time
a couple thousand miles from home.

That's not the exact mileage from
Lancaster, Ca. to Verdun, France,
but I'm indicating I was far from home.
Later I was transferred to Pirmasans,
Germany for about two years after
DeGaulle kicked the U.S. Military
out of France.
