You caught me casting my eyes on you
above the gaps of heads clustering
inside a subway train, packed tight
against each other, absorbed in their own thoughts
perhaps envisioning their day ahead.

I wonder if I will ever catch you again also
casting your eyes on me - strangers
in this moment in time thrown
together, fragments of life standing still
while the train moves on to get to our stops.

If I had a surplus of optimism, I would ask myself
Is something on your mind, that you could throw
your gaze on me with such disquieting intensity?
But optimism is a kind of wine - it trumps sense,
makes one imagine a wish-granting gem as real.

The train stops - in the rush of people getting off
we lose sight of each other - but maybe
when our worlds collided in an infinitesimal flash
of time, we joined the knights of old seeking the grail,
the hunt as enticing as tilting at windmills.

Ahhh . . . You brought back the subways of New York. This was back in the seventies and I'm fresh out of Hicksville, Arkansas. I had to catch the subway to work and back home. Was this old country boy surprised when a woman I was standing behind on a crowded subway reached behind her to . . . er . . . find me. I quickly found out that a crowded subway was a better "pick-up" place than the local watering hole.

Maybe I spoke too soon and too vocal . . . Sorry if that is the case.

didn't see anything out of place in your response Jerry. Fact of life, life aboard subway trains, etc..who knows how many chance encounters happen there...

Sometimes "the eyes upon you" and that unique feeling it gives, turns out to be all there was to be had from that person anyway. Or worse yet, a larger dose could have been fatal.
That special moment wasn't about what could have been.
It is a special moment because how it makes you feel, even now, when you remember...

Ah, fleeting pangs of love so often felt, and yet so momentarily, an attachment that fails to lock . . . often I've wondered is such things stem from past lives . . .

well written, my friend.
