Fair to middlin' of nowhere

I’m not ready
for her to leave.
I know we’ll stay in touch.
Many times a day…
It won’t be the same though,
trying to fix it
from home
without really
fixing it,
so she can learn
to be on her own.
She can be fearless-
I have been awed
and gut-wrenched.
Often simultaneously.
She is old beyond her years,
yet refuses to grow up.
She is a paradox.
She is a contradiction
incarnate.
You’ll find her talk
is impeccable
But her walk
is easily distractible.
I’m not ready
for her to leave.
She is still too
young and dumb,
and much, too much
like me…

I know you have fears concerning her leaving the nest, and rightly so, Lori. But alas and drat, it has to be. It is the ago-old, not so much the time-honored, ritual of growth. I agree, at eighteen she is still too young and dumb, but she must make her own way, her own mistakes. She will be fortunate if she has your take on life when she is your age.

I guess she has  to learn, make her own expericences, but as you see her from experience , she is 18 and fill of contradictions, howener i guess you could help her when she will need

She as a good plan for getting an apartment and a job and going to school. She wants to get settled into her job and paying bills before she adds school to the mix. As long as she works her plan. she'll be fine.
We have told her she is always welcome back home- alone (no boyfriends) ~L

Lori, she has learned more than you know and is indeed grown up at eighteen. From  now  on you will  hear, if you listen intently  how much she has learned. After all she is your daughter.

Children take in more than we realize,  as a teacher you know that. Give her space and watch  her soar. She is entering another growing spurt , a stronger, harder one. Be there for her if she makes  a mistake, give no advice unless she asks for it. I always told my children to make their own decisions but to think first because if not the right one they will have to face the consequences.

Best to you.  Grandma Jo

Mine, around that age back then, (both are in their 30's now) was in and out a couple of times, now gone "permanently" -
of course hard to feel any "empty nest" stuff with her living half-a-mile away!!  Sure is nice though to have my two grand children close by!

My son, when he left, never moved back in and he and his family - 3 kids - are in California! And pretty much plan on staying there. Really didn't mind him leaving . . . but not that far away!!

Ah well . . . wish her luck for me, things are a lot tougher now-a-days then when I left home at 17.  All the best to you too, and hoping it's an easy ride for you.

Karilea,
I just wonder what she and I will do when we no loner have each other to fight with and blame things on...
But if she continues to call me several times a day it will probably feel like she is still here sans the mess. LOL ~L

Hey Jimmy! My sons were no big deal I guess as they were already living with their dad. They knew they had to sink or swim.  Hays is about 2 hrs away. Easy enough to come home if need be but far enough not to come home for every little thing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter! ~L

Not having daughters (all sons), maybe I didn't experience the same heart-wrenching ache you have. But that's just normal for moms & daughters..part of growing up and letting go..take heart, take care
