A Day with Dad

I sit down on the grass, a broken man,
And as always, you are there for me…
Laser-engraved eyes sharp as ever,
I know you see it all.

This is your day, though I no longer
Know how to bring you joy on it,
When joy is a lost concept to me, myself.
Could you tell me please?

I pick the overgrowth from around the edges,
Polish the face with my cloth,
And never leave flowers… I know you’d hate that.

There is no decoration to cover up what is.
I know this.
I watched you bear similar grievances your whole life,
I know I should be stronger.

Then again, I stand four years from the age you
Were when you were taken from me…
How much more can I afford to bear?

The emptiness inside you became a home for cancer…
How has it not consumed me as yet?

I am consumed with naught but grief and questions.
Questions I will never have answers to.

Think I will just lie here with you a little while,
if you don't mind, and we can be dead together.

I've been missing Daddy so much I've actually been avoiding a trip to my hometown and the cemetery. Every word of this resonates with me, but especially the last 4 lines.

Hugs to a lonely son from a tearful daughter.

this shows the importance of Dads, to validate us, to encourage us, to be a part of us as we are a part of them, and the sadness we can feel if we were not fulfilled...james
