Eyes’ Melt

Watery sunlight filters in, I watch the shine begin.
‘Will last an hour, maybe two, until it’s dark again.
The sensation, an eerie thing, trapped in this ocean cave.
The last thing Fate should ever bring one living in his grave.

I tempted her, I know I did, of Death I was not scared;
And could not keep such feelings hid, was not as if I cared.
For Death and me, a bargain struck ‘bout immortality…
And so, a fool, I pressed my luck with all I could not see.

Now, Death has proved a callous being—one who holds much sway.
So many things he slipped by me in the contract that day.
Now’s touched my lung; as well my skin, indeed, my very blood.
And yet, I just go on livin’—his will now understood.

Oh he may never weigh my soul, as if it still would climb;
Just carved me up, left me unwhole, and cursed for all of time.
Prying fingers of sanity, his curse laid to my mind.
I yet know I owe this to she who saw me undermined.

Jasperated orbs I recall, in truth, I should have fled.
Still ruled by temptations of youth, I followed to her bed.
The torrents struck, my world fell dark, the Gods were not appeased.
I woke up cold, alone and stark, chest feeling tightly squeezed.

Breathing water’s never easy, but that’s just what you do
When imprisoned beneath dark seas… hurts like a mutha too!
Yet if you’re one who cannot die, suffering just won’t end.
Though at times Death will still stop by, to touch his closest friend.

Of that sweet, tempestuous kiss that brought me to this lair,
(Deep in oceanic abyss, beyond the reach of prayer),
Still see that face as my eyes close, that vision will not lapse.
Skin whiter than the whitest snows, her touch a crystal grasp

I find my soul still held in thrall by—will forever hers.
Carving a slash unto the wall each time this light occurs,
Though years of moss and crystallizing have proven this fault.
It’s ritual now, symbolizing eyes’ melt to burn of salt.

Okay . . . This took me on a trip . . . Sure you wasn't dropping acid when you wrote this, Michael? Heh.Heh The man that could not die. One other man tried that in "The Picture of Dorian Gray." Still, I guess there is within us all, at various times in our lives when we secretly wish to live forever, but of course, like Dorian Gray, we never grow old. You pulled of an interesting piece of poetry here, Michael . . . Gotta love it . . .

At one point in my miserable life Jer, I was truly convinced that Death just refused to take me...  but had no qualm taking a vital organ here or there when it suited him.  I have long pictured Death and Fate being the walls and warden of my prison, life itself.  Tried to break out a few times, never successfully.  We will see if I am ever freed.

I was held in thrall from beginning to end (fortunately, by superb poetry, not by Death *S*) - but especially love this verse!
