Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Driving by porches
on places.
that speak to
the nature of
the people inside.
Trying not to judge
books by their covers,
my eyes wander
their spaces.
Some porches capture that,
from a magazine
look that I envy.
Other places,
take me back in time
to where I’ve been,
and I’d rather not go back again.
I’m counting porches
to see how many
look like me.
Porch are like people,
at their best or worst
and everything in between.
I compare theirs to mine
to see where I sleep
in the American dream.

Wow, have never really "looked" at someone's porch since I was young.  Indeed, you can tell a lot about a person or family by what they present to you right out there in the open.  Scary almost.  Enjoyable read, Lori.  Somehow I know I will be looking at porches today when I leave.

I have always liked porches. Love the two I have now. I have lived in places where I just had  front and back steps. I enjoy spring and getting the porch ready for "sittin" again.~L

Ahhh . . . You are so right in thinking that porches bear the image of what kind of family lives behind that door. Only you would have come up with a poem using porches as its central theme. Good on you for that.

I'm sure I would like yours. I marvel at the creativity of what people do with their porches. ~L

remarkable words for me to enjoy the spirit of the poem, hidden things are important but not only, we have to share dreams and porches can be true help (that metaphor is so sweet), enjoyed a lot

Wonderful piece, my friend - never thought about porches as a subject - and you did it so well and in a direction I probably wouldn't have ( If I had every thought of it!)

well done!

my favorite porch was at my grandma's house in Elizabethtown Kentucky...it was big and on the right side was a huge hanging swing....james
