Ocean of Tears

I've always held my emotions
Behind my highly built walls
Too scared to let someone in
Afraid I would crumble and fall

These ocean of tears
You can see them barely on my skin
From the pain of past memories
That try to surface again

What I wouldn't give
Just to be lying on a sandy shore with you
As I try to break free from my own chains
Back to a love I once knew

I held that love in the palm of my hand
Watched as it slipped through my finger tips
Felt paralyzed, couldn't even make a sound
My heart becoming a canvas of deep cuts and rips

Now you probably question my love
Wonders if it was really ever real?
And how can I blame you
When it's exactly how I would feel

So why do I hold onto hope
Against the dark blackness of night
Perhaps it's because in the distance
I can still see a fading light

Just like lighthouses bring sailors home
Safely to shore
I can't help but feel we're not over
And that there has to be more

I never told you near enough
Just what you mean to me
Now I fear perhaps it's too late
And I should just let you be

But every night I close my eyes
I still dream of you
Of the lake and so many tender memories
When our love first blossomed, so beautiful and so true

If I could just somehow
Reach out to you, call out your name
If I could look in your eyes
Would I see you feel the same?

True love always waits.

Brava lady poet, SO good to see a new hand at the pen!

Beautiful longing here, many of us can relate.

Thank you for sharing! And this line?...

"...My heart becoming a canvas of deep cuts and rips..."

...POPS!

It is very difficult to go back after a breakup and reclaim what we once had. Past battles, and angry words and deed come back to haunt us with every nuance and inflection of out voices. Enjoyed your poem, truly did, Amy.

What a tender and gentle glimpse of the longing, chaos and desire within your heart.  People rarely reveal to me like that.  I know it's really for "everybody" but cant help imaging that you are talking directly to me.  Thank you, Amy my eyes filling with tears.

Jerry,

Yes it is truly difficult to go back. This person and I are also best friends...we have been able to salvage our friendship which was number one most important for us both.

Jaime

Thank you for your kind words. I do bare my soul when writing. I'm glad it "spoke" to you...that is a wonderful compliment.

True love always waits.

so brave of you to open up your heart to such personal feelings - but healing can come with finding the words to express the pain and the memories can fade gracefully with time.

No easy answer to this one, Amy.  I aspire to the "if you love someone, let them go theory."  It actually panned out for me, but even so, a lot of time has been lost.  Who's to say how things could have went if I tried a different approach?  Wishing you all the best.  ((hugs))

Your inspiration comes from a beautiful memory still roaming your heart. I think many of us can relate to what you convey in your "Ocean of tears", but your hope for "more" is likely to be satisfied by someone "new". Of course there are exceptions.

Very nice poetic work anyway!

Love,
Margherita
