[getting my inspiration from, of all humdrum  things, a mailbox]

Mailbox
stands solid and firm
like soldier playing sentry
guarding the house behind it.

it is a fort holding secrets
stuff on people's private lives
no one else has privy to.

It is foolproof, fireproof
burglarproof, tamperproof
Uncle Sam saw to it.

I am a lone sparrow
perching on top of it
on a warm May day.

Should I envy this mailbox
who stands so proud and aloof
full of self-importance?

I think not - it is like a prison
where inmates cannot escape from it.
But I can fly away at will.

soar to high heavens
flit from tree to tree
unfettered and free.

Goodbye Mr. Mailbox
I'll come back again
another day to tell you stories

of villages I passed on my solo flights
of the winds that shake the trees
of the sun breaking at edge of sea

of islands that rise beyond the aegean blue
and cliffs that huddle intimately close
giving shelter from the storm.

All these and more I'll share with you
to lift the loneliness I sense from you
'though you in all bravado will never admit.

isn't it grand when something inanimate like a mailbox could inspire such life?

Quite interesting ponder here.  Everything in life is a matter of perspective it's true.  this exemplifies that well.  Enjoyed.
