Diviner

He sighs and pinches open flame
Between forefinger and the thumb.
Smoke rises through darkness to claim
The air, with scent of things to come.

His wild eyes, focused on naught,
Lost to images from the void;
Reveal to him things never taught,
Nor in the realms of man deployed.

The danger to name a thing, “mine.”
The hesitancy in a voice—
Curse he refuses to divine,
As echoes of silence rejoice.

Yet he can’t unsee things that “are.”
For now is here, not yet to pass.
And there is no raising the bar—
There is no turning of the glass.

He falls backward, into the chair,
And in the black, closes his eyes.
His future lost to a despair
Even the Gods couldn’t improvise.

There is no choice, but to follow
The heart where it wishes to go.
Though the path leads to a hollow,
Naught but emptiness could bestow.

Michael I always marvel at your work. You do a fine embroidery of words to tell a story, most often in dazzling dark shades. Your rhymes are (I think of them as) complex but not forced. You use older, formal English like I use clichés. Guess that makes me a fan. ~L

rejoicing with that silence*

Have I ever told you 'bout the gypsy curse? might be a mark but it's a divination of strength in trials vs a curse. I could fall into this topic but fallin's messy...so I'll lean a bit for you to hear me better

I can feel past and present mingling on a path and I'm thinkin' it to be a good thing Michael You even throw in enough warm to make it feel like home, hesitant as it may be.

Lori, thank you so much for your words.  I used to think I was born a century beyond my time... I know my writing style alienates me from many audiences, but to hear such praise from even one person makes all the difference in the world to me.

Tanya, a very good path, indeed... and if home is where the heart is, well I'll be there soon.
