sometimes the wretchedness and suffering
of my life comes to call
and there has been much o’er the years
the only solace I’ve found
was my emotional essence
(soul to some)
BUT I prefer essence
we all have this essence within us
those who choose not to
look unto that essence is a fool
from the moment we
emerge from our mother’s womb
essence comes from within
I write this poem
knowing death is standing beside me
matters not
if I am struck down in this instance
my words will somehow
find their place within the essence
of another
and will be said on the morrow
they will live
can another spew out words
of a dead poet?
I know not, but I know this
sometimes when I conjure up words
I have the strangest sensation
that they are not my words at all
but the words
of some poet long dead
when I am left with that feeling
I shiver tho it be in the heat of summer
therefore
I have come to the conclusion
in my mind at least
we poets
are part and parcel
of ourselves and
lingering poets pushing their words
into our thoughts

it wouldn't surprise me in the least.... I often wonder about that when I find poems of mine that I really like but don't remember writing. I like to think my muse is, in essence, essence. ~L

You got it Lori. Hey! When you get a chance I'd appreciate it if you would check out "Nancy."

I write because it will be my only legacy to those I love left behind, because in my words though poets, long dead, or maybe still living have voiced these same sentiments - my essence, as you rightly say. Good thoughts, Jerry

This is not meant to be uneasy, but try to write about something other than yourself. Broaden the thoughts.

Many thanks, jjote, each poet, novelist, writer of whatever "need" to write or they wouldn't keep on keeping on. Sure, we are affected by the ghosts of other poets we like and read, as I am sure they were also.

Redstart. You write about what the hell you want to write about and stop telling me what I should write.

you pull no punches and are a poet of true grit...don't give in to the naysayers
but then again, you're a crusty guy and wouldn't do that ever. great poem !

who is to know and say, I remember writing and feeling like I was in some kind of beautiful trance....so....whose to say ?

Lovely way of expressing the out of body experience.....
