oh the days when my walk was proud
my stride purposeful
n’er walked in another’s shadow
‘twas my shadow which
towered so strong and erect
eh . . . those days
are gone forevermore
I am still, at the age I am
are able to walk
though not as purposeful
as before
my shadow doesn’t
tower o’er others now
I walk in the shadows
old age has finally found me
my mind, however is still
pretty much in place
my thinking gene
is still intact
even now . . .
some days I think death
would be preferable
than this measured creeping of age
but then I look over
at Zoe
she needs me
and if I am gone
no one would take my place
and do what I do for her
so I smile
and send these dark thoughts away
they are untenable
in my minds’ eye

Zoe has been a blessing to you in your golden years in many ways, my friend. I'm sure all your little walks together have done you a world of good. And that is just scratching the surface. They say having a pet makes you live longer. ~L

I'm thinking pets do make people live longer. With pets there is complete devotion. No arguments, just love and more love. I was raised with dogs and have loved them all my life. I've had cats, but dogs take my heart like a cat never could. Thank you Lori, thank you very much for being here.

It happens to us all, and I like the way you show it in the walk.  I'm a little slower now, and maybe a little tireder (if that's a word).  I used to walk forever, and now I creep a bit. But let's enjoy it while we can, right?

No, you are sending them nowhere. I know you, Jerry. You are me. Too much of me, and too little of those who matter. Too much of us and self-pity. I'm dancing your tango, and never mind dogs!

you and your buddy Zoe are blessed with each other. I hope for many good healthy years
for both of you to keep this bond between
man and dog friend, it enriches our lives
I know this myself with my cat friends

Apologies. You know how poetry can send you off on a tangent? Well, that was one such occasion for me. Your love for Zoe is tangible. Respect.
