The Misery

Oh I set sail ‘time ago,
Home of the brave, if not the free.
Ever to chase that midnight glow
‘Cross the ever blackening sea.
Some named it myth, this thing called love,
But I, alone, dared ‘prove them wrong.
Till the clouds hid the moon above—
Till angels stole from me their song.

The dark it lingered, I pressed on,
As if a man been drawn by Fate.
The sea ran still, the winds all gone,
And still thought I, ‘Tis not too late.
What Stubbornness instills in men
Is given Chance to bring to spoil.
And yet what chance could Chance have when
Man’s the master of his own toil.

I worked it for all it was worth,
I dropped the masts, I took the oars.
Still never once gained sight of earth,
My hands reduced to bloody sores.
It was the penance I was due,
I finally came to realize.
The choice, still mine alone to rue;
Result, mine alone to despise.

In that darkness flourished reserve.
The strength I gained outweighing loss.
Now, though more than I might deserve,
Standing once more, to bear this cross;
They call to me from starboard post,
The spirits of a day long dead.
Such allure—voices of ghosts
Inviting me to share their dread.

The map I see now, and rejoice;
The Misery has brought me through.
This Devil’s sea, my light of choice;
The company of others who
Have come this far to be let down—
Have lost it all, ever to weep.
She keeps us in her sweet renown,
Ne’er ‘gain to know the peace of sleep.

Ahhh . . . Michael, this is one, if not THE best of yours. You keep going. You keep writing. Just when I feel that your words of gloom have seen their last days, you prove me wrong with such a poem as this one. Love you guy!!!

You  wrote this on Christmas Day! I hope Santa brought you a quill pen and Shakespeare's clothes...I think they'd look good on you. ~L

Thanks, Jer.  the gloom isn't quite so bad I think when I can at least be creative with it.  This was inspired by a picture of a ghost ship riding out a storm.

Yeah, Lori, spent Christmas alone this year and this was the result.  Didn't really feel it was appropriate to share during the holidays.
