If I Were a Flower

If I were a flower, well I might be a black rose.
Although a love lies bleeding would fit better I suppose.
If I were an emotion, stemming from years of haunt;
I know it’s true, looking at you, I would simply be want.

If I were an animal, my life spent in a cage;
I would just be a prisoner chained to this world’s stage.
But I, my friends, am just a man, and therein lies my shame.
For if I were anything else, I might just have a name.

If I were a sound, you’d hear a windswept lullaby,
Echoing fast and far away ‘cross the forbidden sky.
But sounds soon fade till all left is the cleft of memory,
And still we reach for what we know will never again be.

If I were a river, I would sing my song by dawn.
Still, dusk arriving way too soon might name me Acheron.
Yet I’m nothing—nothing at all: not voice, not hope, not trust.
And if I were a flower, with time I would still be dust.

Eh . . . and dust is all we are in reality, Michael. I have my dark side as do you, although I have quite writing about mine so often. Still, it is there. Lori made a good observation today on one of my poems. She said she has been living with dark so long that if it were to leave her she wouldn't feel whole. I am paraphrasing, but that is the gist of what she said. I agreed with her, and said I felt he same way.

I think there is always a bend in the road...and if your stuck in dark and want lighter, the other road is worth taking...starts with gratefulness, everybody has something to be thankful for...james

Michael,Whether sound, or river,flower or song you will be remembered by many. Your poetry pours out of you and I have never read one poem or story that was not memorable. And yes in time we will all turn to dust. Best to you, Jo

Flowers, rivers, animals, lullabies...all beautiful gifts, Michael. I think there is a bit of light somewhere in your soul and it  is written between the lines of your poetry.

What Jerry said, and what he paraphrased (and very well at that - I read that piece)from Lori... we all have our dark. Some of us "want" to live it, others, like me, treat it as a necessary and integral part of life but don't belabor it, rather we choose to try and  be better than that (nothing derogatory meant, my friend)- and yet others live it because that's all they feel in life.

Jerry, I'm happy to observe, is conquering his "darkness" and seeing there really was more than that (but I wouldn't want him to stop writing about it - not only is writing carthaic, but he does it so well), and you, I see glimmers in your writing (I read many of yours), of light coming through cracks (break out the shades, it may make you squint one day!).  And like and for the same reason, I would not want you to stop writing about the dark either.

Gee --- carried away here aren't I!

enjoyed much...

Once we are past the dark paths in our lives, we can be grateful if the road becomes lighter. We can look back at how we found the strength to carry on. So Michael, it's just a phase, and you will know when it's time to move on. It's what we call growing up.

Well, dear Michael, I love this very much. You are a mightily gifted Poet and you do have a name ... a wonderful name at that.

If you were aware of Who you really are you would never use the word shame in your regard. You are blessed because you use darkness, but just by doing that, you give the Light more power.

Love,
Margherita
