It’s raining
it’s nighttime and it is raining
yesterday’s giving sun
is being nurtured by the life-giving rain
I sit here book in hand
I close it and lay it down
now it is gone
like the daytime closed by night
books
I live for them
I write them
I love them to say the least
novels . . . thrillers
written to make you forget your troubles
at each page turned
novelists fabricate people, places, things
sometimes like tonight
the rain coming down gives
a beleaguered writer a chance
to pen its cadence
then insert it in the story
as simple as that
the rain turns into a puddle
the puddle into a stream
the rain never stops
and therefore becomes a flood
the sweet young heroine
is trapped
cannot drive to safety
she is doomed
until . . .
the novelist yawns
stops writing
goes to bed leaving his heroine
in abject terror
maybe,
just maybe he will have a revealing dream
and tomorrow he will be able
to save the frantic damsel
his dreams sometimes does that for him
unless they turn into nightmares
even so
there are ideas in nightmares
if we but
take the time to look

Excellent piece, dear Jerry. Insightful too. A writer no doubt knows how fruitful a night can be, a dream, and as you say even a nightmare ... Our subconscious mind is such a great collaborator I would say. And the rain too!

i love books too, and the rain makes them more precious, the atmosphere of the poem is balanced between serenity and questionnings, it is very poetical, thanks for the fine penning

You are absolutely right, JP about dreams (nightmarish or otherwise) ...
I've actually 'dreamed' some of my poetry before actually 'penning' it ...
(which leaves one with a REALLY strange feeling sometimes)

I have the misfortune (or fortune depending on your perspective)of never remembering my dreams. Though I will admit that I have been awakened in the middle of the night by poetry that demanded to be penned. I am sure those pieces were created in my dreams.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look

Blessed is the cloud that brings the rain that pens the poem on a sleepless night
to some merely clouds, to the poet
pure love

Yeah you're right Emma. I know I see things within my realm that might shock, even frighten some . . .
