(my apologies to Daddy Goose for giving me an idea for this poem?, soliloquy?)

what if humans had only one hand
that would mean they would have just one arm
because if the other arm would have no hand
how foolish or stupid it would look hanging limply on the side
like it had nothing to say if it had a mouth by itself
it could not wave to show welcome or bid goodbye
or hug somebody in close or warm embrace.

how would the end of the handless arm look -
like a stump of a tree limb struck by lightning?
or a baseball bat maybe.
and on that note,
a human would not be able to play baseball with one arm either,
only if the other arm has a hand with super strength,
could it swim, play tennis, drive, or do the ordinary things
a two-arm, two-hand person can do.

But if you are not into swimming, or playing baseball or tennis
you would not miss having an arm with no hand
but you would very much miss it if you want to hug
or cradle a baby, a lover in your arms.

So where could one possibly stick a handless arm on the body -
so some use would come with it
some body function could be assigned to it-
(I'm open to suggestions, so we can write an Operating Manual for a Handless Arm)

If you were a headless horseman, how about sticking the arm
on top of your neck - it can do the shaking and the nodding
and if the arm is as long as Ichabod Crane's,
and with superman powers, use it to strike your foe senseless.
(come to think of it, if you're headless, you won't get a headache
just thinking up all sorts of ideas, impossible or improbable
they could turn out to be).

because I own a head, now I'm having a headache
with all the torture I wrote for a human with a handless arm,
because my head has eyes, now I'll go close them
have a dreamless sleep
and with my two arms, cross my two hands
over my breast to hug myself goodnight.

Thanks Ethel and yann(?) for stopping by to read. It was really a silly write while on the road yesterday and nothing to look at but icy trees, icy streams and white rooftops (I wasn't driving with one arm by the way, was my son with 2 complete arms..Lol)
