There is a certain time for old men
When we step softly around closed doors
Of other times,
Hoping not to disturb them.

We begin to observe
Stop signs and we heed them.
Better to not bring up
Things of the past.

Instead we think of a more innocent time,
Smiling outwardly,
Remembering how we were as young boys,
Just beginning to notice girls.

Secretly falling in love with our
Fifth-grade teacher
Who smiled a lot,
And smelled so good.

These open doors are ours to visit,
It is the closed ones,
The one with locks on them,
That we scurry past with a quick look.

We do stop sometimes,
Stare at certain doors
Until our eyes begin to mist over,
And we quickly move on by.

It is when we look around,
Seeing no one and open that door,
That our nightmares
Take us places we fear and dread.

Yeah, I guess some things are better kept behind those doors and locked away in the past.
I know I've made enough mistakes in my life and some of them I'd be happy to keep behind those doors.
However, this is another great honest write from your pen and I enjoyed it.

Hey Jerry,
Eric pretty well says it. My little gremlins like to open my doors when I'm being distracted by the mundane. That is probably the real reason I hate housework, it leaves me alone with my thoughts and they often default to those damn doors!

Thanks Eric and Lori. Good seeing both of you this morning, and thank you.

I much enjoyed reading your poetic vision of past events. This idea of doors is brilliant. We recognize the doors and have our choice, whether to open them or let them be. We can also imagine that behind all the doors things have been "elaborated", clarified, purified and that we have let go the pain related to certain events ...

When asked, I always say I would not want to go back. I cherish certain memories of course, but I focus more on the now and try to be positive about the future.

Excellent work.

Doors: a grand metaphor for memory. It'd be nice just to visit the bright, warm rooms, but we just can't stop ourselves from getting out those keys and going where we know it'll do us no good. Relevant and thought-provoking as always.

I still visit the past, Margherita , but in a stand-offish sad sort of way, I don't really let it get to me much anymore. Thank you for your eloquent words.

Hah! Yeah you're right, Redstart. When we like to walk through doors knowing they will make us cringe I'll never know. I walk through them, but with a different attitude these days.
