I cannot forget the past
but I wish for no more sadness
anguish and sorrow
no more tears of disappointment
war is hell
sometimes we must fight
still, I am weary
of the killing
and the devastation of whole countries
where lives
are not worth the snap of your fingers
children scared forever
wish I could change this old world
for the better
like I have changed myself for the better
but insanity and greed
for power and monetary reasons
have usurped the world
for their own selfish purposes

I couldn't agree more with you, dear Jerry. You have said it all and I love the comparison you made between your own personal change and the change for the world. As Gandhi said: Be the change you wish to see in the world.

This poem is precious and perfect for the beginning of this New Year. So much suffering could be eliminated from the world if instead of greed there was love and caring for each other.

Thank you.

Love and peace.

Margherita, thank you, and you are absolutely correct in everything you say. I just know personally if everyone in the world could change their lives for the better the world would look and act so differently. I know if I was able, finally, to chase my demons away, something I never thought I would be able to accomplish, then anyone can. The thing is you have to want to change.

Yes, you are so right in your reasoning, Jerry. We have to awaken to Love, the ripples of love are far-reaching, but there are still too many who know nothing but hatred. Eliminating poverty and hunger is the first step, but the path to world peace is probably still a long process.

Wisdom is reached at a certain age and usually the will to change comes when we LOVE and feel LOVED.

Again, thank you, for your highly significant "wake up poem".

M.

Eh . . . That love word. It pops up everywhere. If we take what everyone says they are -- in love -- with the significant other and observe them, it usually isn't too many years until love has turned into victimization, trysts, humiliation, spousal abuse (not all men do it, I was raised in a family where my mother was a tyrant to the nth) to outright murder, so love is a word I like to avoid. I firmly believe that "love" causes more pain and suffering that anything else on this planet. I hope you don't take this as me criticizing you, because I am not. I just know what I know through personal experiences and observing others.

You are on the right track for sure Jerry. I so agree with Margherita. I will defend her use of the word love in so far as there are different kinds of love. Romantic love is only one kind. I think agape love was more what Margherita had in mind. That is the kind of love we are greatly in need of.

Okay, Lori, had to look up agape love. Never heard of it, or seen it in print as far as I know until now. Yep, I can see the difference in that love rather than the one we usually think of. I guess, in a sense I have metamorphosed into that kind of love in my later years, and with certain people in my life to enrich it. Thank you for being here.

I wish for the same thing, Jerry. I guess there's not enough of us in this world.

I think there are more than enough, Ida, but everyone  is sitting on their hands. Fear of reprisal is probably that driving force.

JP - Change never comes like a cascading waterfall but more often one drop at a time. We humans need time to evolve into wisdom from smartness after being dumb. Change the world Jerry because it's waitin' for it. Nice work JP. Namyh

The world needs compassion and understanding- after that love should be natural. Lovely write Jerry.

Think love is what you make of it; how you accept it, return and/or give it - and you have to do so with an eye on reality.  One can't change the world, but sure can make a difference in oneself.  And it HAS to start there.

good write...
