Sometimes late at night time becomes available
and all the things put on the shelf become alive.
Time to bring them back to mind and thrive on unforgettable dreams
Time to recall the happiness of planning those dreams.
Time to realize not all those dreams could ever come true.
But time to realize that they were always of the highest quality.
Time to realize that's being human and wanting the best for yourself and loved ones.
It's always a relief to respect the gift of life wanting the best you can do.
You might smile and wonder how you could dreams such things.
Then you'll recall your precious blessing of innocence at the time.
Belief in yourself wasn't a bad thing at all but a stepping stone to new discoveries!

Wonderfully expressed, dear Eric. You came to great conclusions with your nightly reflections.

Have a great 2015!

Beautifully said, Eric. Too bad my life didn't mirror yours. You have read my poetry, especially during the early days here. Those were the days when I was still in a rage about what caused me to spend so much of my life dealing with hate, so much hate I could never see the sunshine or others smile without believing it was false. Through my poems I wrote myself out of the hate, but by then it was much too late for me to "fix" what I had wrought. I envy your words of love and protection of loved ones. I have come full circle, and these days, as I said I no longer hate, I have absolutely found contentment. And then I read such words as you have here and I realize just how much I have lost. I've forgiven everyone who needed forgiving, and then I turned around and forgave myself. One person (now deceased) I will never forgive. I don't hate her anymore, but I will never forgive my mother (adopted). I'm sorry, man, for going on somewhat of a rant. Your words touched me deeply.

I missed this one Eric. I am always impressed with what you write. I do not think I ever was a "dreamer".If asked as a Very young  child what I wanted to do it I might have said become nurse or Teacher.Only because an older mentor once said I would make a good teacher because I had a lot of patience. That was when I a was abut ten. I lived in the library and read about Florence Nightengale and so I thought a nurse  might be a good. Again I read about Anna Pavlova and thought how wonderful to be a ballet dancer. Then in my early teens I thought I would love to travel and what better way than to be an s on an airline hostess.I wrote to a few airlines and they at that time (1943-44) I could not wear eyeglasses so I wrote to one of the coast to coast railways and they  said at that time e they did not have need of one. LOL I was not a dreamer as The ideas just appeared and just as fast disappeared. Books were my best  friends. And oh the places I could go.IN real life I tend to put the cart before the horse and when I thought I should learn to drive I called the MVD and made an appointment for a test. Then I called the driving school and made an appointment for lessons. When the instructor told me Iwas ready and he would call for an appointment he was very surprised when I told him I had already made one. LOL I lived most of my life that way. Not dreaming of what I could be  but in just being. Love seeing you on this page. Jo

Thank you for the kind words and the quote.
I always appreciate your comments so much.

I'm not sure I know how to reply to that other than your words are such an expression of pure honesty and make me realize that there's never a set of words/expressions that cover all of life's situations.
However, I do know that you have been as good for this place as it has been for you. If writing has done that for you then I'm pleased to have witnessed a part of it even though I might not have realized it.
I guess all I can say in my simple way is never look back!
Always good to hear from you.

As I read your words I believe you might have been more of a dreamer than you think. Books created your dreams but you considered them.
There's more than one type of dreaming or viewing the future so to speak. You certainly don't come across as an unhappy writer or person, so there must have been a dream or two slipped in there over the years that you wished upon (smile).
Especially with those children you worked hard at bringing up...............
"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" covers a lot of different avenues of perception and you can't escape it.
Thanks so much for the great comment.

It must be intrinsic to us that we display our past life on walls and shelves, because we all do it. It's like a trip through time to sit, late at night, and soak up those moments stilled in time. A staircase to who we are today. A pleasure to read and to share your dreams, and warm at their conclusion.

Eric,
your writing obviously stirred some hearts and that is the best feeling in the world for a writer.  And I'm so glad you wrote this piece to give me an opportunity to reflect.
all I ever really wanted to be was a wife and mom with time and money to devote to expressing myself artistically. Funny how I never really thought about being a poet, even though I wrote poetry since I was in grade school. Now poetry is a sustaining force in  my life that I nurture and celebrate.
Thank you so much for giving me pause to realize I have been living my dream and things are finally turning out to be okay after all.

And, a good poet you are and if this piece stirred that in others then you're right, it's a delight to communicate that way.
Wonderful to read that some are living their dreams to a certain extent.
Thanks for the input and as always keep up the good work!

I just read Michael's "Yearbook"... then opened this poem... and I'm wondering if the cosmos isn't trying to jar me out of my apathy and avoidance through the pens of talented poets. Your words are wonderful, ethome... and went straight to my heart.

Time to recall the happiness of planning those dreams.
Time to realize not all those dreams could ever come true.
But time to realize that they were always of the highest quality.

Those dreams do linger, Eric. No matter how far fetched what would life be without dreams? Great write on the subject.
