Paused on the segue of summer nostalgia
and the knock at the shutters

the bare branch extends itself

sycamores gutted, deep in remiss
the last of the leaf dancers
no longer dangle at the call of the piper

we can fuse our dark shadows
fill in the hollows in the rain enhanced
trenches

but I can't blind my thoughts
when the windowed world draws me

knowing soon all will escalate
in the howl of the night, the forthcoming
maladies, tragedies and serial snowfalls
that chip at the marrow

but humbly the sycamores
lapse into dormancy while all that surrounds
is prey to the inevitable

as the brush of the breeze, pale in
the distance, rocks gently the psyche....
for now

Ahhh . . . Winter does indeed beckon, Emma. The temperatures are decidedly different down here in the swamp today than it was yesterday. We've had temperatures nearing eighty for the past week almost. I have a feeling that has stopped permanently. I just love how you construct your thoughts and words.

Dammit I'm Mad is Dammit I'm Mad spelled backward.

You caught that winter atmosphere so powerfully, dear EmmaRose.

Exquisitely done.

If your stray thoughts are like stray hairs, then you have silky tendrils of thoughts that slip loose and lovely.

Lovely imagery in this thoughtful poem.  I'm especially fond of "but humbly the sycamores
lapse into dormancy while all that surrounds
is prey to the inevitable"

Emma, thank you for this beautiful poem.Even here in "Sunny Florida" my huge Sycamore has been naked for a while. Stripped of its green leaves and now lie, huge as dinner plates in their coat of brown, just lie there upon the ground. I can no longer rake them up and add them on to the compost pile so they will lie as they fall and work down into the ground on a scattered level. Thank you again.

Hello Emma: Nice foreshadowing of the coming bitter winter cold. Barren. Desolate.

something is looming with the onset of winter. Hush, shutter the cold, and feel the warmth inside. Cold days hold as much love as the over-head sun x
