*
Motionless from behind a window
I watched a golden leaf in its battle
between clinging to its mother tree
and longing for its final solo dance.
Captivated by its dialogue with fate
I moved closer with my heart
silently whispering words of love.

I felt the urgency of the breeze
whose invitation to let go increased
the rhythm of the trembling leaf.
It sweetly rocked within my eyes
and touched my core with its song.
A song of gratitude for life
a song of sorrow and of joy
a song of final good bye,
accompanied by a background sound
similar to a bee hive hum
just before it moves on
into freedom.

Suddenly the breeze paused
we both catched our breath
and savored the moment of peace.
Let's cling a little while longer then
to show the world our outfit of pure gold!
But the breeze was quickly back
with its gentle nudging to let go ...
Let's be brave now and take a leap
into the open arms of tomorrow
wherever that will be.

The final notes of the leaf
kept me in reverent silence,
I knew I was meant to listen:
“Stay with me oh stay with me
while I dance my last dance on this plane
as I move on in joy into freedom”.
The infinite grace of the leaf's last dance
left me in awe and mesmerized
as a silent tear fell from my eyes.

I have witnessed life
and its transition into the light.

Absolutely the very best poem I have ever read concerning the yearly falling of the leaves in the fall, Margherita. You were as one with the leaf. You lent the tenacious leaf all of your emotions, feeling what you felt the leaf could very well be feeling. When the end finally came it was your heart you sent to it along with that one silent tear. Amazing poetry!

If they give you ruled paper write sideways.

Thank you, dear Jerry, for your wonderful, uplifting and generous comment on this poem.  It really happened as you said, I stood there for a long time and observed the scene feeling a very strong connection with the leaf. Today I finally put it into words. And I am happy you liked it!

and isn't it wonderful to know someday it will return
your tribute to this moment is golden as the little leaf that brought you to awareness of its journey as it is your journey as well

now THIS is a good a writing ever gets ! ... such words are likely the only
lasting source of true 'magic' in this world ... here, you have certainly
'painted' the world in bright-delicious colors with a 'word-brush' of light.

Poignant and inspiring--as you witness it's flight! Reminds me of a tanka I wrote on a similar theme but
with  a different ending for the leaf:

a maple leaf
lands on my shoulder. . .
every autumn
its color still vibrant
inside my favorite book

Bless your very special heart! You were able to  "go there" with the leaf. Then you blessed us all when you took us there with your words. Thank you so much!

Beautiful, my friend, and there is nothing I can add to all the words before my own - they've expressed it all ...

Very much enjoyed.

That clinging on to life is futile. Believe in life's spring, or eternal decay. Forward with the the fruit of the loins, or finished. You delivered this with such ease. It was simply beautiful.
