Fair to middlin' of nowhere

As often happens with women
A man comes between them

Best of friends
Become estranged

Love’s infatuation
Is a special kind of insanity

The kind that made me
Walk away from my best friend

I never thought it would be forever
I thought we’d get past it someday

I gave my daughter her name
She knew she was dying

There was much to overcome
There were more important things

Then a kid ran a stop sign
And then she was gone

And I still grieve
For my best friend

And I have come to realize
And be grateful for

Being estranged when she died
I was accustomed to her absence

Had she been ripped out of our used to be
I would have been devastated

God showed mercy
He softened the blow

I still weep for her
For what we had

I weep for me
For what I’ll never have again

When Rose died
So did a part of me

Thanks Emma, It is hard to believe it has been 17 years since she passed. She was one of a kind.

Touching memories, but I'm a little confused. Rose knew she was dying, but a kid ran a stop sign and then she was gone?

Sad, but understandable. We do not always have the chance to be there for one we loved. OH to have had those last few days together. Jo

Redstart you are correct, She needed a new liver but was so low on the list to receive one her chances of a transplant were a million to 1. The car accident killed her in part because of her bad liver. It was a blessing in disguise her husband said at the time. He took her off life support 3 days after the accident.

Jo, she could make me laugh until my face hurt and dear God how I miss that. She was one of a kind.

Wow, Lori! This brought tears to my eyes. So much truth in this.

Ida,
Bless your tender heart.  Thank you for letting me know it touched you so. I wish it was just good fiction like what Jimmy writes.

I read this when it was posted, but it hurt too much to reply then.  Yes, time doesn't seem to heal much - the longing just grows stronger, perhaps a little blunted at times, though.  I know this from what I feel for my precious late horse, Flicka, who went to Heaven 12½ years ago, my dog, Daisy, who went to Heaven almost 5 years ago and my cat, Tigger, who went to Heaven just over 4 years ago, and all my previous animals before them.

Beautiful poem, Lori and very well written.

When we remember them it is just like yesterday...
