Moonbright after the storms have gone,
I stand alone on graveyard lawn,
Muck and mire it covers my shoes,
I come here to moan o'er my blues.

My Nancy, my dear sweet Nancy,
They buried you here by the sea.
A cave at your feet, brine n'er your head,
Although impaled you never bled.

The mob was in fine form that night,
The moon high and full to incite.
And in the crowd n'er friendly face,
Your eyes caught mine in an embrace.

I turned from you as you did cry,
I dropped my gaze from your sweet eyes.
One lone voice might have stopped it all,
But I was quiet and you they mauled.

So I come here after each storm,
Hoping that you are snug and warm.
Then I return back to my cave,
To watch over you, tend your grave.

I am resigned to mine own fate,
I recall that night, myself berate,
My faint of heart among the mob,
And part of my soul it did rob.

I'll n'er forget your last spoken words,
As though they had yesterday occurred.
Your children's children, you did say,
Will pay the price for you someday!
