Eclogue
(2nd Movement)

breezes wove through
grains of amber and blond

God sent the birds
to comb wheat fronds, tree tops
blades of verdancy

heavens called up flitting monarchs–
chipmunks, squirrels, field mice
scampered twixt stems, reeds

as they gathered morsels
of fennel, nuts, acorns

a blustery chill burst in
with marked steps
evoking coming winter’s pall

silence

left in want of a third
is this death
is this angst

from where shall I find
my third

Inspired while listening to Eclogue Op. 10 for piano & string orchestra
Gerald Finzi Pianist Myrna Van Cleave

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Somehow as I was reading your excellent poem, VAS I began to think the lines as Poe's The Raven. Wonderful added charm to your poem.

If they give you ruled paper write sideways.

Thanks, Jerry Pat. The composer died at only 55 years of age, before he wrote the third movement of this Eclogue Op 10. I found the piece on line. As I listened I envisioned all that I wrote about and much too abruptly the piece ended. It had become dark and dour and so sad. It really left me wanting the 3rd movement in hopes of coming up out of the depression.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
