sometimes the black night
envelops me like hope forevermore
I understand the feeling
I've been with the feeling before
many times
in these, my last days
the black night
to me is my all encompassing pure soul
soul?
I am a man who does not have the faith
most would glean from that
that I have no soul
ah, but dear readers of this poetical attempt
my soul is alive and well
eh, it may not look like those with the faith
my soul is unconquerable
and it waits not for the coming
nay (Biblically speaking) a thousands nays
my soul seeks
it appears to me
envelops me
though my life scars are many
my soul refuses to consent to me
bowing my head
the past bloody years
and the future menaces to come
I meet head-on
with my soul pushing and tugging
no matter that the road
is crooked and demanding and rife with strife
I am the one who decides my destiny
as my soul looks on
grins and fades back into seclusion again
until next time

JP, it has my experience that people who don't have much of a "religious" background have interesting ideas about faith and souls and the like.  I believe it is your soul that guides you to your faith. You know you have a soul. If you have the ability to listen to your soul and have "faith" in what it tells you, then it will lead you in the direction you are meant to go. You don't need 4 walls and a steeple for that.
Seems to me you searched and found your soul and then your downward spiral reversed and it has brought you to the contentment you have found today.

You pretty much summed it up, Lori. Thank you for that.

An interesting poetic pondering, dear Jerry. It is my belief also that our soul is incorruptible. I see it as the constant of perfect integrity and beauty, even amidst our self-made personal chaos. And that is so very comforting. Loved also Lori's reply.

We can choose to have faith, but our soul's existence certainly does not depend on our faith, imo.

Many thanks, Margherita! You know I believe you are right in that the soul is incorruptible. I remember many very bad days during my two lost decades that physically I did things which any sane person would have been appalled at. I called it survival on the streets of America, a difficult chore. Even as I was in the act sometimes my thought fought against it, letting me know there was a better, more humane way to handle things. So yes! I can testify that the soul is indeed incorruptible.

Margherita, thank you for your unwavering support since I came to PiP.

I think we can all testify that life is not a cake walk...and we all struggle with our demons. you write as though your final days are tomorrow or next week...I'm not gonna die and wish I had lived my life differently...I wasn't always in a good place... but living out my days in utter darkness was not an option. i like the idea in your poem about your soul looking on...then again you and your soul are in this together.  Live a little, life is good and this is all there is.

Oh no, Blues, I hope I don't check out tomorrow or even next week, but the fact is I am seventy-five and anything can happen. Anytime. Hah! I like that you said you wasn't going to die and then followed it up with a cool observation. Yep, you sound like you and your soul are close also. Gives you peace of mind.

This is where I got the idea that you said you wasn't going to die . . . "I'm not gonna die and wish I had lived my life differently"
