at the age he is
he exists with death on his mind
oh . . . but he has felt
the inferno within her mouth
memories are all he has these days
as she sidestepped
the I love you forever mores
she padlocked doors which had been opened
still . . . he has felt the inferno within her mouth
the life he fleetingly had
was now as distant as the pale yellow moon
he felt the moon
and her children the stars
love, inconsistent love
he thinks there should be a law
banning love from ever taking place
here, near the end he thinks aloud
he has felt the inferno within her mouth

No matter how much I forget over time, some things are clear in my mind as if they happened yesterday.  For me, I think writing poetry about those specific things has helped to preserved the memory, as well as the emotion.

This aches to the bone with the same "I know that ache" that Simon & Garfunkel's song Bookends does for me... "Preserve your memories - they're all that's left you." Memories can comfort or torment...  or both. Excellent write!
