The Magic

Where is the magic of the night?
Those voices that sang to me so,
And filled the mind with such delight
I found sleep easy to forego.

I find it tragic, lying here,
(Choices run rampant in my head);
Having gone blind, yielding to fear,
As loss of sleep but adds to dread.

Those words I once could grasp at will,
Ah, how the silence sang for me.
But now, with every echo still,
And even hope mere memory…

…I wonder of the man I am,
And of the man I must have been.
To find the dreams of life a sham—
And peace but a “remember when.”

And so I toss and turn away
Another night in quaint discord.
As even the want starts to fray,
And mundane becomes my reward.

The shadows rife with disregard,
The mind, beset with such confusion.
It looks like I’ve drawn a fool’s card,
There’s no magic, only illusion.

Oh, there are many of us who have "remember when" kind of nights. Most of us also would like if our lives had worked out better. But if it didn't that's okay too. We still have what is left of today.

I've experienced a big of magic in my time but perhaps that's just how I chose to see it in the midst of the illusion. Always enjoy your words mostly because they're real for a lot of us at some time or other.

the resignation in this...pierces me...I want to say...no wait...don't ever let it dwindle to this!

But...then I am inexorably drawn into the depths of the next stanza...truly great writing, sir~*~

Thanks, Jerry.  I don't worry so much over where my life is, though if I ever stopped "working at it" I would probably be in some serious trouble.  I guess "relaxation" is another one of those things I don't play well with.

Sorry for drawing a sigh out of you, Lori.  I'll try to come up with something a little less deflating, if not exactly fresh.

Thank you, honeybunch.  Truly, I have witnessed magic too... I just wish I knew a way to keep it from disappearing.

Bel1e, careful there, it's a slippery slope.
