I Bid Thee Play

I bid thee play, the ear is ripe
For music that precedes the toll—
That somehow wipes the staunch decay
From the very face of my soul.
A soul that’s labored, long and slow,
And heavy the whole of my days.
With secrets but the devil knows…
And sorrows no voice could convey.

I’ve wandered far, searched for release
From this curse all my life I’ve held…
It’s only song that grants me peace,
Turns me from angst I’m so compelled
To follow through the wells of doom—
To embrace, in the face of ire.
Till overcome with dark and gloom,
All loved by me is set afire.

I bid thee play, but nothing light.
Immerse my mind with a steep ache
That cradles me all through the night—
Leaves me shallow in morning’s wake.
Oh yes, I need to cry it out,
Lest my heart burst within my chest.
For joy’s a prison, I’ve no doubt.
For whom, in it, could ever rest?

A tune, fine-tuned, is all I crave…
A tear plucked from stone-clad eyes,
Stumbled upon this unmarked grave
Where all earthly ambition lies.
A hell I traverse, night and day,
To trace etchings upon the stone.
Where naught but a song might allay
The rigors of this life, alone.

"A tune, fine-tuned, is all I crave…"

And so, "I Bid Thee Play"

Nice writing, my friend.

Written with an artist's pen. If a song be your peace: let it play loudly. Let it slaughter the negativity, and open up joy. BeliEve me: joy is no prison. The denial of joy is the prison.

A large sigh escaped my lips, a sort of mourning for your sad soul.I wish your relief could could have been fulfilled as easily as my sigh. Best to you, jo

JP,   Music help me cope so much, or at least helps me to bleed out a bit at a time.  Glad you "felt" this one.

JL, I am glad you enjoyed.

Redstart, Lori, I know you two are right.  Sometimes it's the longing for something I so rarely feel at all that leaves me feeling that way.

Jo, oh, I wish that too.  Thank you.
