Not Hers Anymore
(from Riding the Greyhound)

Big Grey Dog carried me
from city to town,
to those places
where only gas
was dispensed,
and beer and whiskey
across the street.

No Red Light, no Stop Sign,
only a house or two,
mobile,
as if awaiting the next move,
the freeway bypass,
or just the desolation
of giving up,
moving under a bridge.

On the plains of West Texas,
I left Big Dog
to the left of the Gas Station -

Pit stop, said the driver,
20 minutes, no more. –

crossed the highway
to the beckoning bar
where Merle Haggard blues
poured from the front door.

Her tune – the one she played
until the needle wore through
the vinyl –

and there she was.

Never alone.
Not her.
Always in company

and then she was gone,
a mirage, as always,

and me sitting there
drinking beer
sniffing for the scent
of her, her trail
always just ahead.

I put out my cigarette
on the bar
right where her hand
would have been
if she would have waited
like she said.

And all I got
was a sizzle in the water
sweating off my glass,
hissing the words,
words she threw from every door,

I'm not yours
anymore

not yours anymore

unless I see you

again.

Big Dog and I moved on,
sniffing asphalt,
touch of perfume here,
womanhood there,
echo of a laugh,
and always, leading us on,
Merle softly in the wind –

I thought that was George's song, Jimmy.

Thanks Blues --- really appreciate that.

George, among many, sang it too, Jerry, but Merle, not only sang my favorite version (in the 70's or so)but he and some lady whom I don't remember the name of, wrote it I believe.

Hmmm, now you're gonna make me have to look it up!!

thanks for reading...

I checked it out. It was Merle, I would have lost money on it because ALL these years I was positive George first put it out.

I'd call Merle Haggard more country than blues. But, hey, they were your blues. I was so into this. Magnificent images created, and great wording.

"Cause today I started loving you again
I'm right back where I've really always been
I got over you just long enough to let my heartache mend
Then today I started loving you again"

Oh yeah, I strum at that song every now and then.
You built a great story I am sure the "Hag" would enjoy
with his song playing in the background...

Great story, my friend, great!
