to everyone who has served
in the military
in peace and in war
I salute you
I reach out my hand to you
in appreciation
I especially and deeply
salute those who gave the ultimate price
I stand tall
with every veteran
the survivors
though some who survived
like my Uncle Mack
who survived World War II
the Bataan Death March
came home
with the war still very much inside of him
wasn’t able to deal with
what he had seen
what he had suffered
there are many
Uncle Mack’s who survived
only to be shattered
beyond belief
today I pronounce my
utmost respect
for the soldiers, seamen, airmen, marines
those who are serving
those who have served
those who have served and have died
salute

VERY well said. Thanks especially for remembering the Uncle Macks. They and   those with the traumatic brain injuries and their families suffer the most.

Yes, it was a sad about my uncle. He was unable to live in the world. My aunt divorced him and he lived miserable and alone until his death in an "old folks home." Thanks Lori.
