I remember Scooter
my first dog
she only had three-legs
she gnawed one of her hind legs off
to escape from a mink trap
she walked into
I remember Betsy
our old jersey milk cow
can’t recall how that milk tasted though
I remember calamine lotion and
Vick’s Salve
rubbed on my chest
at bedtime
what they called horse liniment
if I got the itch
stood me naked in a No. 10 washtub
pour the whole bottle
over my head
letting it cascade down my body
it hurt
stung so bad
worked though to the best
of my ability to recall
remember playing with Charles
made a hideout
Libby wanted to join
we said she could if she’d show us
something
she did
she showed us something quite a lot
playing cowboys and Injuns
with BB Guns
almost put one of Charles’ eye out
remember the smell of washed clothes
drying outside on the clothesline
dogs filled my life until I left home
Inky and Blondie
Shep
and like the song said
he was my pal
had rubber army men with bazookas
fought the Nazi’s and Japs
even as real battles were taking place
over there
taking the radio to bed with me
covering up under a blanket
to listen to Boston Blackie
The Green Hornet, Baby Snooks
and Amos and Andy
ahhh . . . the three R’s were taught in school
we were pupils not students
we were free to play in the street
I recall good times even though
the bad sneaks in
I shan’t (love that word)
tell of those bad times here

bittersweet memories, a mix of happy and sad, but yours to own and remember as best as only you can write of

Thank you Emma. Sometimes the childhood, carefree days just overwhelm me and I just have to let it out. God knows I write about the bad times enough.

Wonderfully nostalgic. I can relate so strongly  to your poem. Times were much simpler before the great technological advance; our greatest treasures were not counted in cash.
At our core, however old we are, we are still the boy within, and we'll never lose the warmth of such memories.

What a charming piece of antiquity! LOL! Just kidding my friend. It is wonderful to hear about happy times.

So true, Redstart, the glow of innocence is forever fresh.

Antiquity feels good to me at certain times, Lori, it gives me a familiar and happy glow when I can reach way back to the "olden" days and feel wonderful within my innocence. Thank you for your read and comment.
