I have never aspired
to such a grand form of poetry
writing with such
a light touch
that readers of such airy poetry
could be understood
without exposing the poet
or readers
to uncover the darkness
of the poet
I suppose for the sophisticated
and pseudo intellectual
that is good enough
still, in the very core of poetry
poets find coarseness
we uncover
things we never knew
were inside us
we grit our teeth
and write the next line
such uncovering of our souls
is why some say
poetry is dictated by dark forces
and the poet is put to shame
by their admissions
of their imperfections
some time ago only cultured books
were read
to help us accept  our anguish and wretchedness
poetry then
isn’t the same
as the books written
by psychiatrists
no . . .
I maintain
poetry strikes a chord
about how complicated it is
to continue to believe
as we do
just one entity
poetry opens the door to our house
and guests
come and go at their leisure
seeing the dark
as well as the brightly illuminated rooms
that is . . .
if the poet is honest

A truth well spoken! Or should I say several truths... Good food for thought my friend!

Thanks Lori for your kind response to my poem. You are always the first to tackle whatever emotion I may raise in my poems, and I want you to know I appreciate it very much. Thank you.

Poetry should be cathartic. Wordsworth's, 'Daffodils' was hardly an opening of the soul.
You are so right. Whether it hurts or not, it must be honest.

Thanks Redstart, for chiming in . . . You bet it has to be honest and cathartic.

Hah! I like . . . "from the lip and the hip" . . . Emma. Thank you, thank you for responding to my poem in the manner that you did. When I began trying to write poetry I didn't know any other way to do it but honestly. I've never wavered from that concept.
