my memory of my father
(adopted)
is white bread
dipped into the International Paper Company
a brown paper bag
he took to work every day
my father was a good man
ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it
his passion
was his duty to be a provider
and his calloused hands
overflowed with this duty
a man caught up in the great depression
I believe he gave thanks
each and every day that he had a job
which paid the bills
my father only had one sin
he was sinfully
and absolutely dominated

Sam sounds like the heart of America, though too dedicated to his family to think of himself first, like many that live like that
Nice that you have such fondness for one of your parents anyhow.

He allowed that woman to embarrass him daily, even in public. She especially like to tell him how "unconcerned" and "stupid" he was in public. This man was the salt of the earth, even went to college. But there were many times I hated him for allowing her to treat him as she did.

Woman can emancipate men who are unsure of  of their real worth and help them to grow, or emasculate them, depending on the man they have decided to share their life with. He can be helped to reach heights he never thought of or dragged under, and just be left to his so called contentment.

Women on the other hand are often too docile and accept life as it is and take any of man's decisions as if  mandated. But  if we become true partners we recognize each other’s best features and become a team

Just an aside thought: If women did not have the gift of verbal communication where would some men be now? Still in the cave area?

The poem was not an indictment on the female gender, Jo, it was an indictment on my adopted mother and father. Her because she was a shrill, sadistic person, and him because he allowed her to berate him in private and in public on a daily basis all his life. The gift of verbal communication concerning males and females is a good thing, but like any good thing it can be perverted and savaged in such a way as to be very troublesome, to say the least. Thank you for commenting on my poem today, Jo, I appreciate it.

Thanks for introducing us to your father. His sin wasn't cowtowing to your mother Jerry, it was not protecting you from her abuse...

Amounts to the same thing though, doesn't it, Lori?

Jerry I had written this a long time ago to another friend just discussing  male and female relationships. I know  the sad story of yuor Dad and it just reminded me of this long ago conversation. I know your Dad cared and worked hard for his family. And that she was not very appreciative. Sorry for you because it is hard to sit by helpless a a child and see these things happening to a parent of either gender.

I made a bad mistake as I was growing up, Jo. Yes, it was hard on me as a child. I made the decision in my early teens that I would never allow a woman to treat me like she did my father. As you can imagine it caused problems with my relationships with women I met after I left home. Took me a long time before realized I was doing the same thing she had done just reversed it and wouldn't accept any kind of input from the women.

Jerry,I guess you can say you were getting even with her at that time in your life.  But that never really works. It is good you realize the folly of that way of thnking. We are our own person and you just have to forget all that and bury it and be who you know yourself to be. The past has to be let go. I hope you can do it all with a final thrust from your heart and be at peace. best to you, jo

The truth is, Jo, I have come to a point in my life that I have forgiven all that needed to be forgiven and have even forgiven myself. Even so, although I am at peace with myself, I still must write about my experience from time to time. But I am happy. For the first time in my life I am happy.

Thank you Jo. I was probably the most surprised person in the world when I finally found my way out of the dark. I still write dark at times, but I am no longer possessed by it.

My father was the dominating one. Bullying and berating is never a good thing and usually comes from deep insecurity.

I have come to understand that truth. I saw it in me and was appalled at what I had realized. I went to work on the problem and worked it out, but not overnight, it took a while. Thank you, Ida.

Your poetry is the most fearless opening of the inner self as I've read in a long time. Your aversion to your father's weakness is sad, because he seems like a decent man,  but understandable. As you've mentioned,  you think he should have stood up for both of you. Tip o' the hat to you.

You bet, Redstart, he let me down in a big way, but I suppose he did, or didn't do, for himself is what he chose to do for his own reasons.
