What a great idea I have for my demise.
Let me be murdered by a shot to the head
by the jealous husband whose wife I had bed.
Allow me to expire thinking of soft thighs.

Which would be much more humane I think
than putting me in a place with my own kind.
I don't think I can manage being confined
where old people just sit around and stink.

Would that death came to me silent as a sigh
lying in my bed some lonely night dreaming of
faces from the past and a special lady love.
Let'em find me with a smile of wry goodbye.

And that, too, I firmly believe in my heart
would be better than the end intended for me.
In this old folks home, take me away, I plea,
not make me stay with old folks a la carte.

A drive-by shooting as I sat at a bus stop
was preferable I think than rotting away alone,
among the other discards who relentlessly moan
into their hands about a life ready to plop.

Because, look, you, and you, and you there;
you ease your conscious, solve your dilemma
putting us here where they pass out enemas
and watch us with hardened eyes that scare.

We're not cattle, to be penned and forgot
then visited for ten minutes every Sunday
wrinkling your nose at death's ugly bouquet
coming from old people with veins that clot.

Society has come a long way, yes, I know
time is of the essence and precious to all.
Is that any reason to corral us in a stall,
allow us to languish in this faux chateau?

Not me, not for long, I've made a blood pact
with old Ed over there for when the lights dim.
After the nurses come, mouths set so grim
Ed will come and stab me in a kindly act.

He then proposes to slip his neck in a noose
as he stands on his bed, steps into thin air.
Murder/suicide they'll say, finding us there
but we both left a message admitting our truce.

What is this?  A note slipped to me by Big Red
Saying when the lights dim, come to her room.
Oh, God!  What have I done, I rant and I fume
Ed must be warned, Big Red wants me in her bed.

that's what I call going out with a bang

enjoyed the tongue in cheek and wherever else
it may slither into

Heh.Heh I hear you, Emma. This was one of those poems that just had a mind of its on. Still, I think I touched on some honest thoughts about the nursing homes . . . Thank you for wading through this rambling poem of mine.

Very sad and very funny and all too true.I have given strong instructions that I am not to be put into a home for any reason.Let me be until the end. This brings all type of problems because today if a parent is not given the care they need, the law drops down upon them.So many ways run though my head and keep changing as my mind has to stay alive although my body may be leaving, so I  can handle the problem of my demise with no tell tale stories that would incriminate my family. The hows and whys that will lead me to that final dance have to be sharp and cleanly lead to only myself. You Jerry Pat can join old Red and be found exhausted to dead in her bed leaving poor Ed to take care of himself and old Red with a last fling she will live with until her end.

Oh, I hear you loud and clear, Jo. I hope all your mental facilities will remain as crisp and clear as they are today. I have my demise pretty much figured out. My only hope is, like you, I don't suffer a stroke or heart attack which will keep me from going through with my plan. So, here's to both of us making it to the end like we want to. Thank you for your admirable thoughts to this poem and the likelihood that I will be found face down in Big Red's bed would actually be a good thing.

Well, you gave this a touch of humor, but the horror vision comes through strongly nonetheless. As soon as we become unable to care for ourselves, we should be able to "exit" ... in science fiction movies there are some great solutions - i.e. entering an elevator and never coming back, or other such painless "solutions". To witness the atmosphere of certain "end time homes" gives one the shudders. Not many will admit it, but it is one of the saddest things of this our humanity ... when we become a weight to others, even to our own offspring, they will tell us they love us, but deep in their hearts they only want this situation to end as soon as possible.

The alternative is what the gurus do ... they learn how to detach every single string that keeps them alive and die softly when they decide ... and the Eskimo populations sent the old ones out into the cold to be found and taken care of by the Polar bears ... well ...

Today the sun shines and let's enjoy it!

Thought provoking to say the least!

Margherita
