sometimes at the strangest times
I think about the nights
when I slept on hard concrete
street slept
cold wind blowing hard
devouring me
I think of it now
faces of those like me
left their homes
to join the brotherhood
of people such as myself
some of them
passing around a bottle
sweet, sweet wine
not me
when I drank
I wanted a lounge
high class or skid row
never much mattered to me
when I look around
see all the locks on all the doors
giving the impression
they think what’s inside
is safe
they’re wrong of course
nothing is safe
ever
but this is democratic system
you work hard for your dollars
you hope to save it
come to think of it
that’s how totalitarian system
works also
only thing is . . .
tyrannical rulers
like to turn asylums open
to make even more street people
not like a democracy
who merely forgets their bums
ahhh . . .
whatever
its still
a cold wind blowing hard
devouring me

Yeah you're right, Emma. I just can't keep them all at bay all the time. They sneak back in from time to time. Appreciate your input tonight.

...I think it is the olives from the martini coming back to haunt him...

Was your birthday buzz biting you in your business?
I like the way you tied everything up with repeating that last line.

I think you might be right, those vodka martini's did take a toll on me. Appreciate your input, Lori.

"They think what's inside is safe"

Hit the nail on the head there.  Still, not all of those street people you speak of have forgotten the world sees them as bums...  some of them had to lose it all in order to find themselves, and some of them refuse to walk the path the world has laid out for them again.  It might not hold any manner of true logic, but if they have greater peace where they are, who would I be to knock it?  Wow, I could go on forever about this piece... invokes a lot of thought.  Nicely done.

You are absolutely right when you said, "some of them had to lose it all in order to find themselves." That was me in spades. But I have certainly found myself, with the help of writing my poems and not backing off from the real deal and how it was. Thanks, Michael, for understanding.
