Take friends as they are,
They are themselves and not you,
Don’t try to remake,
What they have to give is theirs,
Give unto them what is yours.

One might apply this formula to people in general Jerry. Having friends isn't the same as maintaining them, which some feel pressed to do.

Sometimes people expect too much in the name of friendship, this short poem clarifies the
real meaning of it

Yes indeed, Jerry you are right again. I have a lot of friends from way back, one in particular was from preschool. We kept in touch via  snail mail and visits. When my husband and I moved to Florida she and her husband came to visit on occasions. But after her husband died she was here more often. She made the rounds of her friends and stayed a week or two in our places. We were always different in personality but the friendship was strong. After her last round of visits I asked her if she would rather stay here all winter as a paying boarder and thus be able to travel around at her whim. (I had been having boarders since my husband died). She agreed and as I worked evenings she had the house to herself and made friends and kept busy. On Sat mornings when I came home from work off we went to wherever she wanted to go and we had a great winter together. But she was into make up and jewelry and I was not. She tried to get me to use make up and frills and I reminded her how long we had  been friends and asked if she  had liked me all these years. Of course she said yes. So I asked that she continue to take me as I was. That was the end of that conversation and we continued on until she died on a gambling ship out of Florida. Way down in the archives the story of her death lives on.  Best to you, ,jo

What a wonderful memory you shared with me, Jo, and don't think I don't appreciate it. Yes, some people you have to show them how their friendship is changing, for the worse. Some, if they are true friends, accept it as did your friend. Some, however resist the truth and friendships are lost forever. Thank you again for this beautiful comment.
